Insul Acoustics, Inc. was founded in 1959 by Roy Tonks, Don Tonks, and Robert Pennington. Initially, these three owners of Insul Acoustics were the only employees. Within a few months, Insul Acoustics hired more talented and dedicated individuals making the completion of its first project, the acclaimed Royce Hall at Cal Tech in 1960, a reality. In the same year, Insul Acoustics built a state-of-the-art 70-decibel recording station at CBS using the first drywall metal stud system produced by Angeles Metal. During the years of 1961 and 1962, Insul Acoustics was one of the first metal stud contractors in California. By that time, Insul Acoustics had specialized not only in acoustical and insulation work, but also plaster, fireproofing, doors, frames and hardware. By 1965 Insul Acoustics had grown rapidly and had gained a reputation for outstanding workmanship, which led to the contract to build the prestigious Hawaii Hilton Convention Hall on Waikiki Beach.
Since 1965, Insul Acoustics’ commitment to excellence, and its exceptional quality of workmanship, has earned the company a place among the top specialized contractors in Southern California. Insul Acoustics has remained among the top contractors for over 45 years. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Insul Acoustics completed highly artistic and eclectic projects all over the United States of America, including three large and luxurious hotels on Maui, the Universal Studios Sound Stages, and many others.
In the early 90’s, Roy’s daughter, Julie Tonks, entered the business and became the third owner and the President of the company. We are so proud to announce that in 2005 Insul Acoustics became a three-generation family owned and operated contracting business. What started out as an insulation and acoustical contracting business has become, over the course of 46 years, one of the most successful, established, reliable, and specialized drywall and plaster contractors.
Insul Acoustics is a union contracting business. It is an equal opportunity employer and has fought hard to eliminate any form of discrimination in the field of construction. Insul Acoustics is also involved in our communities, by donating time, materials and profits to improve our neighborhoods and the lives of humans and animals alike. In 2005 Insul Acoustics donated the materials and labor for the completion of the young-animal-nursery at the California Wildlife Way Station. We are proud to support the fight against AIDS, breast cancer, the Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts and many other local and nationwide charities, including local Girl Scouts and numerous softball, soccer, and basketball leagues.
We are grateful to all of our clients who have made it possible for us to not only succeed, but also share with the less fortunate.
